Spring is one of the most exciting times of year in the kitchen. As the seasons change, so do the ingredients available to us, and suddenly dishes become brighter, fresher and full of flavour. Here are five of our favourite spring ingredients and a few simple ways to enjoy them.
1. Asparagus
A true sign that spring has arrived. Asparagus is delicious when lightly grilled or roasted with olive oil, salt and pepper. It pairs perfectly with eggs, making it ideal for brunch dishes like frittatas or served alongside poached eggs.
2. Peas
Sweet, vibrant and incredibly versatile, peas add a burst of colour to almost any dish. They work wonderfully in pasta, risotto, soups or simply tossed into salads with fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon.
3. Spinach
Fresh spring spinach is tender and packed with flavour. It can be enjoyed raw in salads, blended into smoothies or lightly wilted into warm dishes like pasta, curries or grain bowls.
4. Radishes
Often overlooked, radishes bring a crisp texture and a peppery bite. Thinly sliced, they add a refreshing crunch to salads, sandwiches and grain bowls.
5. Strawberries
One of the sweetest treats of the season. Strawberries are perfect on their own, but also shine in desserts, yoghurt pots, smoothies or even savoury salads paired with soft cheese and balsamic dressing.
Cooking with seasonal ingredients is a great way to keep meals exciting while making the most of what nature has to offer. Spring’s produce is all about freshness, colour and flavour — the perfect inspiration for lighter, brighter dishes as we move into the warmer months.
